The global financial crisis is creating a development emergency. Many people are getting trapped in exteme poverty. This slows the fight against disease and causes many to be cronically hungry in 2009

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf today announced the country has slashed its foreign debt by buying back US1.2 billion at a discount of
nearly 97 percent. The World Bank provided about half of the funding for
the buy back with other countries also contributing. Speaking in
Washington, the Liberian President said it was a big day for Liberia with the move an important step in the country's road to recovery.

China has been hit hard by the economic downturn. But The World Bank thinks that China may still outgrow other countries.

After mining for coal the enviroment can be left bare and contaminated, but this can be reversed. The World Bank help return the area to its original beauty.

People used to get cheap effective energy, but things are changing, and the power infrastructure is in need of refurbishment. The private sector has come in to try to help the problems by making an open market for the trading of power.
